Safety-Enabled Adaptive Highway Lighting

Invision’s high-integrity Automatic Incident Detection allows for operators to safely implement adaptive highway lighting. Today, Olympia Odos has implemented our solution on a 200km concession generating energy savings of 75%.

Today, well over 25% of global energy consumption comes from lighting, whether in our homes, offices, streets or public spaces. One of the most simple and basic actions we can take is to turn off the light when we leave the room. This action can seem trivial. But added up on a global scale, it can have a significant impact.

Our highways are no different. They consume valuable energy at night which is often wasted when traffic is low. Adapative highway lighting offers the possibility to dim lights when traffic conditions allow for it to generate significant energy savings. However, its safe implementation was until today not possible.

On the Olympia Odos highway, lights are dimmed over several hours as soon as traffic conditions (traffic density and visibility) allow for it in keeping with the EU regulatory frameworks. With Invision’s high integrity automatic incident detection, the operator can further enhance safety for the road-users: as soon as an incident is detected, the dimming policy is locally overwritten and lighting is restored to maximum. This implementation is only possible thanks to the unparalleled accuracy and low false-alarm rate of Invisions Automatic Incident Detection system.
